Mandy tucked the blanket around Laura Lynnâs arm and smoothed a piece of hair away from her face. The other girl had just fallen asleep again. Mandy felt better when she could talk to her best friend and gauge the level of pain she was in. However, the doctors had said getting as much rest as possible would help Laura Lynn feel better.
That morning, Bear and the sheriff had dropped Mandy off at Marcusâ house so she could go with them to the hospital. Marcusâ mom was consoling Mrs. Weinberger outside the room, talking in hushed voices like they didnât want to let the kids know how serious the situation was.
Ironically, Mandy was pretty sure she was the only one out of all three kids and both adults who had any inkling of what was going on here.
When Mandy returned to the chair next to Marcus, he looked up.
âSo, are you going to tell me what happened?â
Mandy had hinted that something went down after she left his house earlier in the day, but his mom had ushered them into the car, and there had been no time to speak privately until now. Mandy was bursting at the seams with information. âSome guy tried to kidnap me,â she said.
Marcusâ eyes widened and then shot to the door, like he was half a second from sprinting across the room and getting his mom. âAre you joking?â
âNo.â Mandy scooted closer to him. âI was walking back from your house. This guy pulls up next to me in a van. He offered to give me a lift to my house. Like that would work now? Maybe back in the fifties.â
Marcus looked like he wanted to join in the on the joke, but fear prevented him. He leaned in closer. âHow did you get away?â
âI can take care of myself.â Mandy flexed an arm, then giggled at Marcusâ unchanging expression. âSeriously, dude, lighten up. Iâm fine.â
âBut werenât you scared?â
Mandy thought about lying to him, but when she remembered her relief upon seeing Bear at home, she almost teared up again. âYeah, I was scared.â Her voice was quieter now. âTerrified. Everything sort of happened in a blur. I got a couple good shots in. My dad taught me how to fight. But I was lucky. As soon as I had a chance, I just ran away. And all the information we printed off is gone.â
âThatâs why you wanted me to bring my laptop today.â Marcus tapped his bag.
She nodded. âIâm sorry. I really tried to save it. But my bag ripped, andââ
Marcus placed a hand on her shoulder. The look on his face was so sincere, she really did tear up this time.
âItâs okay. Iâm just glad youâre safe. That paperwork isnât worth your life.â He let his hand drop. âWhatâs going on, Mandy? Your dad finds a body in the back yard from, like, fifteen years ago. Laura Lynn and a bunch of other people get sick. And you almost get kidnapped. Even in a movie, this wouldnât make sense.
